SPAMELOT: THE BROADWAY MUSICAL ANNOUNCED
SPAMELOT, a new musical adaptation of the most popular Monty Python movie, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, will open on Broadway directed by Mike Nichols and produced by Ostar Productions, in the Spring of 2005, following out-of-town engagements.
The project, with the title-in-development of SPAMELOT, features a book by Eric Idle, based on the screenplay by Monty Python creators, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, with music and lyrics by Eric Idle and John Du Prez. The musical will feature a completely new score (including two songs from the 1975 film).
"I like the title SPAMELOT a lot," said author Eric Idle, "but I was thinking it might be smart to ask audiences on my upcoming US tour if they liked it as much as I do. After all, they are the ones who will be paying Broadway prices to see the show. So there's a good chance the title may change."
Eric Idle's "Greedy Ba$tard Tour" of North America begins October 1, and will be at the Town Hall, NYC October 29 and 30. Other members of the SPAMELOT creative team include choreographer Jerry Mitchell, currently represented on Broadway by Hairspray and Gypsy, and, the upcoming Never Gonna Dance and Dreamgirls; and, designer Tim Hatley (Private Lives, Vincent in Brixton, among others).
Mike Nichols recently directed the six-hour Angels in America. for HBO, and is working on the film of Closer for Columbia Pictures.
Monty Python isn't a person, but a group of British actors and writers (and one American) that performed their famous comedy show "Monty Python's Flying Circus" on the BBC from October 5, 1969 to December 5, 1974, with subsequent international fame and success.
Casting for SPAMELOT will begin shortly. Run away.
