TROUPE BRINGS FRENCH PRODUCTION OF FLYING CIRCUS TO LONDON'S WEST END
The first and only authorized stage version of the Monty Python television sketches, as performed by non-Pythons, is coming to London. The comedy troupe Remy Renoux have taken their French-language version of Monty Python's Flying Circus and will be performing the show (conveniently also titled Monty Python's Flying Circus) at the Riverside Studios in London's West End starting this January. The Gallic Monty Python's Flying Circus was one of the surprise hits of the 2003 Edinburgh Festival, and has run in Paris and other French cities for nearly two years. Sketches performed include The Lumberjack Song, The Dead Parrot, Sit on My Face, Lumberjack, and The Incontinent Olympics. The sketches are all performed in French with English surtitles projected above the stage.
The show was originally conceived after French producer Remy Renoux held talks with the two Terrys about staging a musical version of Irma La Douce for the French National Theatre. The musical never happened but Remy got to know the two Terrys and talked to them about doing Monty Python in French. After reassuring them about the prospects of a French production, it was agreed to give Renoux the French language rights. The show initially ran in Paris (7 June through 28 September 2002), with Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Michael Palin each visiting the show and liking it very much. In fact, Gilliam was so pleased with the show that he agreed to design the poster for the Edinburgh Festival shows held last year. Now the show has come full circle, returning the Python sketches back to the United Kingdom for a one month run in London's West End. Riverside Studios will also be hosting a Monty Python film season to coincide with the stage production. The stage shows will run from Tuesday 25 January through Saturday 19 February (with a press night on Friday 28 January @ 7.45pm). Tickets cost between £15 and £20, but a special offer is being extended to visitors to this website. See in the inset box above for details. We will also be holding a contest for 2 complimentary tickets... see the Daily Llama home page for details on that.
